Step 1: Know Your Enneagram Type (and Do Your Own Work)
Before you can coach others with the Enneagram, you need genuine self-awareness. Take a validated assessment (the RHETI or iEQ9 are the most respected), then invest time in understanding your own type at depth. Read at least 2–3 foundational books. Most programs require this self-knowledge as a prerequisite.
Step 2: Choose the Right Certification Program
This is the most important decision you'll make. Consider: your target market (corporate, personal coaching, therapy, ministry), your budget ($500–$6,000), whether you need IEA accreditation, and your preferred format (online, in-person, hybrid). Our comparison table makes this decision easier.
Step 3: Complete Your Training
Most reputable programs take 3–12 months. Expect to spend 100–300 hours on coursework, practice sessions, and supervised coaching. Take this phase seriously — the depth of your training shows in your work with clients.
Step 4: Get Practice Hours
Before launching your practice, offer free or reduced-rate sessions to build experience. Most programs include a practicum component, but additional practice is invaluable. Aim for 50–100 practice sessions before going full-rate.
Step 5: Set Up Your Practice
Create a simple website, choose your niche (individual coaching, couples, teams, organizations), set your rates ($100–$300/session is typical), and decide on your coaching format (1:1 sessions, group workshops, online courses, or a combination).
Step 6: Find Your First Clients
Start with your existing network. Offer introductory workshops at local organizations, churches, or meetup groups. Build a content presence (blog, social media, podcast). Partner with therapists, coaches, and HR professionals who can refer clients to you.
What to Charge
New Enneagram coaches typically start at $75–$150/session. Established practitioners charge $150–$300/session. Corporate workshops range from $2,000–$10,000 per engagement. Group programs and online courses can scale your income beyond 1:1 sessions.
Timeline
From starting your certification to seeing your first paying clients, expect 6–18 months. Building a full-time practice typically takes 2–3 years of consistent effort.
